Skiing the Adirondacks
New York may not be the first US ski destination that comes to mind, but it should be one of them!
The Adirondacks especially have a great variety of slopes, skill levels and awesome scenery! Whether you are a pro level skier/snowboarder looking for olympic level diamond slopes, a beginner wanting to learn or a parent looking for a winter weekend with your children, you will find plenty to choose from here in the Adirondacks!
WHERE TO GO
You have many choices here in the Adirondacks, several aren’t far from us here in Lake George. Below is a list of each one along with basic description of its’ highlights and a link for more information:
GORE MOUNTAIN: Gore Mountain —with a total of 109 trails and over 2,500 vertical feet— is a serious ski destination that will not let you down! There are a total of 14 lifts, an eight passenger Gondola and luxurious quads dedicated to keeping skiers from waiting in lines and put them on the slopes where they belong!
WEST MOUNTAIN: West Mountain offers an adirondack experience with more of a “mom and pop shop” type atmosphere. Along with this “home-mountain” feeling they boast over 1,000 feet of vertical slopes. It is a great place to spend time with your family in the great outdoors and it is right next door to Lake George. They have over 126 acres and their more than 30 trails range from easy and gentle to challenging, expert terrain.
KILLINGTON MOUNTAIN: Killington Mountain is not technically in the Adirondacks or New York, however, it is close enough that we felt it should be included in the list. The ski resort is within close enough distance to Lake George to make it a great day trip. It is the biggest ski area in the Eastern United States! So you won’t have to worry about feeling cramped!
It also boasts the largest vertical drop in New England —3,050 feet— so if you are looking for an adrenaline rush it is the place for you!
WHITEFACE MOUNTAIN: A little further North is Whiteface Mountain, which is considered by many to be the winter sports capital of the world! In fact it boasts hosting the Olympic Winter Games not once, but twice! Not to mention the countless World Cup events that have takin place there! It also boasts the greatest vertical drop east of the Rockies!
You might want to spend some time enjoying the posh shops of Lake Placid while you are up there!
DISTANCE FROM LAKE GEORGE
West Mountain is only about 15 minutes away, you can get to Gore mountain in about 40. Vermont has some great skiing also, Killington and Bromley are both about an hour and a half away, so a day trip would be easy to do.
Now you know where the closest skiing to Lake George is! Lake George Village makes a great place to stay. In the winter months it is more relaxing and less crowded than in the summer, however, the lake is gorgeous! For a winter getaway, sometimes it’s nice to be in less crowded spots!
